Meta Platforms (META) is cutting about 600 jobs from its artificial intelligence division, according to a Reuters report. The move comes as the social media giant tries to fix what leaders call a “bloated” organization and speed up its work on next-generation technology.

- The cuts target the Superintelligence Labs, including the Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) and infrastructure teams.
- Employees will receive 16 weeks of severance pay plus two weeks for every year they worked at the company.
Restructuring for Speed
The job cuts are part of a plan to make Meta’s AI teams leaner. Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang told staff in a memo that the unit had become too big and slow. He noted that by having fewer people, the company can make decisions faster and give each remaining worker more impact. While 600 people are leaving, the company’s elite “TBD Lab”—which builds its biggest AI models—is not losing any staff.
A Change in Strategy
For years, Meta has been hiring as many AI experts as possible. This marks a major shift. A source close to the company said the goal is to stop different teams from fighting over the same computer resources. Even though Meta is letting these workers go, they are still hiring in specific areas where they need more help. Impacted workers have been told they can look for other jobs inside the company until late November.
What This Means for Workers
The 600 workers being let go are entering a “non-working notice period” until November 21. During this time, they keep their pay but don’t have to come into the office. Along with the 16-week base severance package, Meta is offering career support to help them find their next role. This is the first major cut to hit the company’s high-priority AI division since the industry-wide boom began two years ago.
